Volunteer Placements and Internship Opportunities

The placements below represent Volunteer Kilimanjaro’s largest community-identified needs. However, if there is a match in community need and volunteer expertise, we are happy to arrange a volunteer opportunity which is not listed below. Read feedback from our volunteers here.

Education

Volunteer with Local Students

At present, Volunteer Kilimanjaro is focused on recruiting volunteers to teach in local schools and in the Volunteer Kilimanjaro Educational Center. Tarakea is home to many primary and secondary schools, all of which possess a particular need for English teachers, as well as significant need for teachers with other expertise, such as science, math and computer literacy. Education volunteers operate under a set curriculum, or they create after-school clubs where they may design their own curriculum and activities, such as videography, golf, storytelling, etc. Volunteers traveling together are encouraged to team teach, and will also have the opportunity be a teachers’ assistant if preferred. Volunteers who would like to tutor students or teach computer lessons to youth and/or adults will volunteer at the Volunteer Kilimanjaro Education Center. Program Development Internship

Golf Lessons

Volunteer Kilimanjaro is a young organization, and we always looking for volunteers who have travel experience in developing countries to help expand our program. Responsibilities of this internship include developing new placements through research of community-identified needs and host organizations and development of interesting cultural activities for fellow volunteers. Interns will work closely with our program coordinator and will spend much of their time touring the local community, getting to know local residents, and with volunteers, accessing their placement needs. Basic Swahili language skills are useful for this internship, but not required.

Other Placements and Internship Opportunities

Local Farmer

Although we are only directly recruiting volunteers to teach and tutor, there are other placements, such as health and agriculture, that are options for volunteers as well. If you have one of these interests, or a particular research or project interest that you would like to discuss, please contact us. We are always open to shaping volunteer placements or internships to satisfy university requirements, as long as we have the capacity to help and the project or research will be beneficial to the local community. When in doubt, just ask!

For more details, please contact us at volunteerkilimanjaro@gmail.com.  To apply, fill out the Volunteer Kilimanjaro Individual Application or the Volunteer Kilimanjaro Group Application and email it to Cate Elander at volunteerkilimanjaro@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
