Homestays and Kilimanjaro Cabins

Volunteer accommodations are arranged with host families or at the Kilimanjaro Cabins, a locally-owned and operated residence in Tarakea, Rombo District. Groups will be housed at the cabins, and individuals will either be placed with host families or at the cabins, depending on availability. Tarakea, the host families and the cabins are situated in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. While the exact details of accommodations vary, the cabins and host family placements all have running water, showers, plumbing and indoor kitchens. At both sites, breakfast and dinner are prepared onsite, and volunteers will have the opportunity to learn and cook traditional Tanzanian recipes.

Kilimanjaro Cabins

The staff at Volunteer Kilimanjaro is prepared to accommodate individuals with specific dietary needs. Those volunteers interested in farm-to-table and local foods movements will be pleased to know that most meat and produce are sustainably farmed and local to Tarakea, often harvested onsite at the cabins or from host family farms. Volunteers will have their own room or share a room with another volunteer.

Kilimanjaro cabins are staffed 24-hours a day with a property manager, cook and security person.

Road to Kilimanjaro Cabins

The neighbors are very friendly, their children curious and eager to meet visitors. A local school, church, and various residences and shops are a short walk’s distance from both the cabins and host families. The cabins boast superb views of the hills at the Kenyan border.
